Lagoon Gleam è una videoinstallazione che abbiamo realizzato in dialogo con Michele Brunello curatore della mostra “XPort Venice: Venice heritage and innovation Hub”. Promossa da Suzhou Design Week, Comune di Venezia e Fondazione Venezia 2000, allestimento Dontstop Architettura. L’esposizione celebra la relazione tra Suzhou e Venezia, due meravigliose città d’acqua gemellate da oltre 38 anni, patrimonio dell’UNESCO.
Lagoon Gleam, designed by Mira, is a giant animated fresco that founds the bond structure of the exhibition “XPort Venice: Venice heritage and innovation Hub”, promoted by Suzhou Design Week, Venice city hall and Fondazione Venezia 2000, set-up by Dontstop Architettura. The exhibition celebrates the relationship between Suzhou and Venice, two marvellous lagoon cities twinned from over 38 years, UNESCO heritage.
Siamo state invitate a reinterpretare il tema della mostra: “Come la tradizione porta innovazione”.
Abbiamo ideato un grande affresco animato che costituisce l’ossatura della mostra XPort e mette in relazione le stanze e gli oggetti-simbolo, scelti per rappresentare l’eccellenza veneziana nel mondo. Ad ogni oggetto corrisponde un tema legato alla città che abbiamo rappresentato all’interno del video.
Il vetro di Murano è la città della creatività e degli artisti\artigiani. Il merletto di Burano è la città della collaborazione, condivisione del lavoro e dei saperi. La forcola è la città lagunare, urbanità in simbiosi con l’ambiente e la biodiversità. La maschera è la città delle relazioni, dello scambio e dell’accoglienza.
In this work we have staged the Venetian excellences in dialogue with the thematic rooms of the exhibition: The Murano glass symbolizes the creativity city of artists\artisans.
The Burano lace is a collaborative city, sharing workmanship and knowledge.
The forcola is the lagoon city, an urban site in symbiosis with the environment and biodiversity.
The mask is the relationship city, of exchange and welcoming.
Technique and director’s notes
La proiezione è stata concepita come un gigantesco quadro in cui tutto accade allo stesso tempo, costruito partendo da elementi reali: il vetro, il merletto, la laguna, le città.
Abbiamo progettato e realizzato un caleidoscopio artigianale, fatto di specchi vetri colorati, che rivela ad ogni rotazione una nuova visione come metafora del continuo scambio tra li punti di vista delle due città. A sottolineare il processo artigianale è l’elemento ricorrente delle mani, simbolo estetico e progettuale del nostro lavoro.
Il risultato è un’opera ibrida tra tradizione ed innovazione, artigianale e digitale, dove abbiamo mischiato persone reali, parti del corpo e figure oniriche; adoperato oggetti fisici come vetri e merletti e simulacri costruiti con le nostre mani, sperimentando effetti analogici per rendere l’atmosfera della nebbia e i riflessi dell’acqua. Con tutti questi materiali eterogenei abbiamo creato un mondo onirico che fonde gli immaginari tra Cina e Italia, Venezia e Suzhou.
We have invented a language to rebuild an imaginary, mixing the esthetic of the chinese shadows theater and the italian “teatro di figura”, in contamination with different techniques of digital shows and animation movies. The result is a hybrid opera between heritage and innovation, handmade and digital, where we have mixed real people, body parts and dreamlike figures; we have employed real objects like glass and laces and simulacrum built with our hands. We have also experimented with analogic effects to paint the atmosphere of the fog and water reflections. With all these miscellaneous materials we’ve created an oniric world which melts together the imaginaries between China and Italy, Venice and Suzhou.
La tecnica e lo stile che abbiamo ideato ricostruisce l’immaginario del teatro delle ombre di tradizione cinese e il teatro di figura italiano in contaminazione con diverse tecniche dello spettacolo digitale e del cinema d’animazione.
Dopo aver assistito alla lavorazione del vetro di Murano abbiamo immaginato la fornace diventare la bocca di un grande dragone cinese, marionetta di carta animata in cut out, che come un maestro vetraio soffia perle di vetro incandescente. Abbiamo studiato la storia e la tecnica delle merlettaie di Burano e l’estetica dell’architettura veneziana per costruire una grande maschera il cui abito è un collage di archi e merletti che nasce dall’intreccio delle reti dei pescatori. Abbiamo ritagliato e assemblato le diverse forme delle finestre veneziane per rendere la struttura leggera della città lagunare.

The technique and style we have devised reconstructs the imagery of traditional Chinese shadow theater and Italian puppetry in contamination with various techniques of digital entertainment and animated cinema.
After having witnessed the working of Murano glass, he imagined the furnace becoming the mouth of a great Chinese dragon, animated paper puppets in cut out, which like a master glassmaker blows incandescent glass beads. We have studied the history and technique of Burano lace makers and the aesthetics of Venetian architecture to build a large mask whose dress is a collage of bows and laces that comes from the intertwining of fishermen’s nets. We have cut out and assembled the underwater windows from the Venetian windows to make the light structure of the lagoon city.
“La video installazione Lagoon gleam è la trasposizione estetica e concettuale dei temi portanti della mostra, e ne costituisce l’ossatura e la scenografia principale [..] Il tema delle mani, che ricorda l’atto di “pensare con le mani” tipico del processo progettuale del design, si interseca con gli elementi naturali che forgiano il vetro, le reti minute dei pescatori che emergono dall’acqua e diventano prezioso vestito di merletto, la foresta rovesciata che fonda Venezia e che fa corrispondere ad ogni colonna un albero sottomarino che la sostiene, il caleidoscopio che non sta mai fermo e si riconfigura continuamente per l’intervento gestuale delle mani, come un dispettoso scherzo carnevalesco [..] L’estetica grafica unisce stilemi e simboli cinesi con i simboli veneziani, creando una serie di paralleli e rimandi tra Venezia e Suzhou, l’Italia e la Cina, l’Oriente e l’Occidente. Un tappeto sonoro sovrappone i rumori della banchina di un porto, i rumori del vetro che tintinna, il gorgoglio dell’acqua che riverbera avvolgendo lo spettatore in una bolla atemporale.”

The video installation Lagoon gleam is the aesthetic and conceptual transposition of the main themes of the exhibition, and constitutes its main framework and scenography. The animated loop synthesizes and superimposes the different levels of meaning of each of the four sections, with a series of symbolic and dreamlike frescoes, with continuous references between different points of view.
The theme of the hands, which recalls the act of “thinking with the hands” typical of the design process, intersects with the natural elements that forge the glass, the minute nets of fishermen that emerge from the water and become precious dressed in lace, the inverted forest that founds Venice and that makes each column correspond to an underwater tree that supports it, the kaleidoscope that never stands still and is constantly reconfigured for the gestural intervention of the hands, like a mischievous carnival joke.
Symbols, visions, symbolic objects, urban themes act as a bridge between tradition and innovation in the exhibition and in Lagoon Gleam merge in a visual landscape that tries to reproduce the uncontrolled beauty of the city. The graphic aesthetic combines Chinese characters and symbols with Venetian symbols, creating a series of parallels and references between Venice and Suzhou, Italy and China, the East and the West. A sound base superimposes the noises of the dock of a port, the noises of the tinkling glass, the gurgling of the water that reverberates enveloping the viewer in a timeless bubble.
